Rich in Tradition and Majesty

The 8th Oldest Club in the Country

Established in 1888, Kebo Valley Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Maine, and the eighth oldest golf club in the United States. Kebo has tested the skills of many of the country’s finest players, most influential politicians, and leaders of industry. Kebo includes 18 spectacular and well-maintained golf holes, each hole will challenge and excited players of any level.

President Howard Taft, U.S. Open Champion Scott Simpson, and PGA legend Billy Casper have hit drives and sank putts on Kebo Valley’s hallowed grounds. In 1911, President Taft cards a 27 on what was then the “Elbow” hole, which is today’s 17th. This hole is commonly referred to as the “Taft” hole. You will play the same holes that one of the greatest golfers of all time played, the one and only Sir Walter Hagen. It was in 1922 that Sir Walter played two rounds at Kebo Valley. With Cadillac Mountain sitting majestically in the background, Mr. Hagen first shoots an even-par 70 and then cards a course record 67, which stood for 50 years. After Playing Kebo’s signature 8th hole Mr. Hagen stated, “The 8th hole is one of the toughest four pars I have ever played”.

“I have rated over 100 different golf courses throughout the United States and Canada, and I have never played a course with any better greens than I played today at Kebo!”

Beware of 17

Came here for our honeymoon. It was super wet so had to walk, but what am amazingly fun and wicked beautiful golf course! Easily my favorite ever. (7 handicap). Staff were pretty effing awesome too. Only complaint is that whomever designed no 17 hole should rot in H E double hockey sticks. But it sure was pretty.

Perplexing Putting on a Pretty Course

Beautiful views, fun fairways, fast greens, and great staff. Pricey, but an enjoyable and memorable round. Every employee we saw or came in contact with was courteous, friendly and respectful. Many thanks to the grounds keepers for their efforts at not distracting golfers.

Very pleasant & peaceful

We played as a walk in couple.
The guy in the shop was very helpful get us started.
The course wasn't busy on a weekday afternoon so we felt like we had the place to ourselves.

The course flowed with a nice mix of hole dynamics.

The water in the streams & ponds was crystal clear.

We saw a deer which was a bit of a treat for us.

The deck looked inviting as a 19th but we unfortunately needed to hit the road.

Folks, play here, pay the money & enjoy the fresh air & serenity.

Historic & scenic, but quite PRICEY

Was in Bar Harbor for the week & decided to play a round while wife was at the spa. The course was convenient to Bar Harbor. The course has some neat history and great views. The layout was decent. The greens were well maintained and quite fast, you definitely want to be below the hole. Greens fees were quite pricey - for the price I expect a lot more. I've played courses of similar quality for a fraction of the price. I've also played other courses for this price that had a much better track to play. All in all, it was a nice round, but I don't know that I would play it again, unless greens fees decreased.

Friendly staff, excellent old time course, highly recommended experience

I was a little concerned about Kebo Valley based on some online reviews thinking it would be snooty, unfriendly country club atmosphere. It was nothing like that. Every member of the staff we interacted with was friendly, helpful and did everything they could to make our experience a positive one, the course was fun and challenging and our overall experience was terrific. I'd recommend this course to serious golfers and casual players alike. Plus it is 5 minutes from Bar Harbor and very convenient to visit.

Great Course

This a really nice course with a very attentive staff but the true selling point is the surrounding beauty. The course is a bit pricey but they certainly do their best to get it in great condition with the short season they have. The greens were absolutely perfect. The course is user friendly for all levels, I played as a single and the locals all let me play through and finished in 3 hours. If you can get over the gravel cart paths and gas golf carts, you will be glad you played here.

Awesome old style course - one of the best in Maine

Played here in a 2 day tournament. Even though I struggled with my game I really love this course. I am a big fan of old style designs and this does not disappoint. It is not impossibly hard or overly long... and there are some holes you can score on. But you better have your short game in top shape! If the greens are fast (and they were for this tournament) you will have trouble stopping the ball if it is above the hole. I really struggled on the greens but plenty of people scored well in the tournament so I just need to practice more. Overall greens and tees are immaculate and rest of course in very good condition considering the dry weather we had. We played the ball down and didn't have a bad lie all day.

Overall a fine course and well worth it if you like old style designs.

Golf With The Groom

We traveled to Bar Harbor recently for the destination wedding of my nephew. Many who were attending planned to arrive prior to the weekend, and so we planned for a day of "golf with the groom", on Friday before the big event.

I was in touch numerous times over the past months with Peter, the club pro to set up our day. Peter was very accommodating, allowing advance reservation of tee times, and the fine tuning of our numbers two weeks prior.

Our four groups teed off on Friday morning and were done in plenty of time for those in the wedding party to make the rehearsal. I think our round was just about 4 1/2 hours.

The course, especially the greens was in very good shape, especially considering the drought conditions in New England this summer. Had a great day at the 8th oldest course in the US.

Golf

Paid a 114.00 each for this course. the first 11 holes had the grounds crew mowing weed whacking blowing off the fairways this was at noontime. The ranger drove through Fairways tee boxes never looked. The fairways, tee boxes ,and greens are aligned in such a way they're begging for someone to get hurt.the highlight was the greens were in good shape. This course has management problems.

The club restaurant was outstanding. Great food and service has non golfers coming in take advantage of the feel good cuisine.

Not as good as the hype

So, played this course today, and yes it was a nice course but I've played prettier courses down in the smoky mountains for cheaper. $100 is pricey for a course in this shape. The greens were very slow ... 9 on the stimp. Also, it was very unfriendly to women. One of the par 5s was 505 yds. which is really too far for most women to reach in regulation.

While there are some pretty views of Cadillac Mt, that alone doesn't make it worth the cost. I realize the historic value of the course but there weren't as many elevation changes as there could have been for a mountain course.

Wonderful Old-Style Golf Course!

Keno Valley Golf Club is a real treasure. Built on undulating hills, it has a variety of interesting holes that alternate between user friendly and quite difficult. It can be hard for those playing the forward tees if they do not hit the ball very far. The course is maintained in very good condition. If you are looking for a gem of an old style course, then Kebo is "just what the doctor ordered"! We definitely recommend it for those who value golf's finest traditions.

Excape the crowed steets of Bar Harbor and play golf at a 120 year old masterpiece!

Have driven past Kebo Valley over the last 40 years and finally played. We were lucky to be paired with member who was great with his tips on each hole. Initially built in 1896 without the sophisticated tools available to todays designers. The routing has some zig zags that could cofuse a first time Kebo player It was a fun layout with plenty of difficulty if you stray from the fairway. The 3 pars are challenging perched high on a hill or requiring a long carry over water. I will play it again! Look out for #17 or you could best President William Taft's 27 on the hole!

Fabulous from start to finish!

My husband and I played this course this morning and had a great time! The greens were phenomenal and the course itself was challenging but not overwhelming. Playing the holes where Cadillac Mountain rises as the back drop was just beautiful!! It's a long Par 5 and takes on average 4 hrs and 15 minutes to play. Greens fees were more than we typically pay ($218) but it was worth it.

Kebo gets better wih time

We have been doing family reunions to Bar Harbor for the past 20 years and I must say this past visit (7-2-2015) the course played better than ever.

The grounds crew has done a spectacular job making the course one of the best in the Northeast.

My only gripe is that Maine has some strange alcohol laws that prohibit my Bloody Mary's on the course... lol

If your vacationing in Bar Harbor, you must try the 8th oldest course in America.

Don't pass this up

A great course, not particularly long but no one ever said that it has to be long to be challenging.

A bit expensive, but it is worth it for some of the views set in Acadia National Park.

If you have the time, take the time to play.

How often can you play the 8th oldest course in the country.

Public Course Golf At It's Finest

What do you get when you combine Myopia Hunt Club with Royal Dornoch?

You get Kebo Valley. Herbert Leeds and Donald Ross. Leeds the Myopia designer is largely credited with the design at Kebo but his work encompassed only 9 holes and many of those were later changed. Someone else was responsible for the the changes and the second nine. Historical data is limited but Donald Ross is believed by some to have had a say in both and his firm designed many other courses in the state including the Northeast Harbor Golf club, a mere twelve miles from Kebo.

If Kebo isn't a Donald Ross course someone did one hell of a job imitating him.

Interesting Course

Wife and I had the opportunity to play Kebo Valley on our recent trip to Bar Harbor. Course is everything that most other reviews say … has some of almost everything … hills (some quite steep), long par 4s, short par 4s, short par 5s, longish par 5s, short par 3s that seem to play longer and longer par 3s that play shorter and that par 4 17th hole that really killed my round.

I'd love to play this course again to see if I can do better.

Happy to have found Kebo from the Forelinksters.com guide to the best public golf courses. It's an interesting history as the 8th oldest golf club in America, but the course features are the star here. Drivable par 4's, the par 5's reachable in two, blind shots and doglegs, small, devilish greens, all extremely well conditioned at a favorable greens fee.

Old school charming

First trip to Bar Harbor and a friend strongly recommended I play the Herbert Leeds course. Very well conditioned and enjoyable. Good layout with numerous blind shots and plenty of movement in the greens. Second trip round the course would be much easier. The pro and staff were extremely helpful with tee time and rentals. Played late Saturday in 2 hours and 15 minutes, all I needed was wine for my wife.

Great course *tough greens*

Gorgeous golf course with a friendly staff. This course is the eighth oldest golf course in America according to a recent newspaper. As for the views as you walk or ride they are amazing. The course is well kept. I found it very reasonable for the level of green and fairway they have. The greens are pro/am fast so if you are used to a local green expect about twice as fast. The breaks can be somewhat blind and sometimes what you read is not there. Still a great outing.

A dream....oh, and golf too

A gorgeous, really old course where it's hard to concentrate on the game with the scenery shrieking "look at me!" But the course plays charming tricks - a rocky rill tossed my ball onto the green, and a huge pine tree deflected one drive to center fairway. Go in the late afternoon to take your time and revel in the twilight.

5th oldest golf course in America providing great scenery

The golf course itself is very well manicured as groundskeepers were busy on multiple holes maintaining its beauty and are courteous to players when on the tees and greens.

Kebo Valley provides a great backdrop to the scenic mountains of Acadia National Park and it's set in an area which provides golfers the opportunities to work on their game playing golf in the wind...thus the "valley" part of the course's name.

I was up in Bar Harbor on my honeymoon and only played 9 holes. Because holes 6 through 9 takes the golfer out 1.5 miles from the clubhouse, the pro shop told me to play 1 through 5 going out and then tee off at 15 and play through 18 coming back in.

Lots of elevated tees and these were by far the second toughest greens I've ever putted on. If you're not pinpoint accurate with approach and chip shots, your ball is rolling off the edge of the green making it very challenging.

The only downside is the price...as I found $58.00 to walk 9 holes to be pricey for a public course considering I've paid less in Southern NH and Northern MA courses to play 18 holes with a cart. That being said, the pristine conditions of the course make up for the cost.

Overall - i have very high reviews for the course, the friendly staff, and the challenge of the course. A MUST visit for the golfer on vacation in Bar Harbor.

Nice track, great scenery. Pricey for club rentals and golf cart to add on to green fees! I am big on customer service and this was really lacking in the Pro Shop and with the cart girl. An absolute gem

I played Kebo Valley today. It is literally five minutes from Main Street in Bar Harbor, and it is a very cool track. The course is in excellent conditions and is tucked up against mountains, making for great views and elevation changes. The greens are fast and challenging. The course is relatively short -- 6,100 yards par 70 -- but it is far from a pushover. It is great mix of holes, each with great character that comes from classic design and 125 years of maturity. I've played a lot of golf all over the country, but rarely I have I found such an unexpected delight.

Fun traditional course

I recently played Kebo Valley while on vacation in Bar Harbor. It is a nice old course and the conditions are in great shape, especially compared to the three other courses that I played in the area. Great views and scenery. We saw three deer at separate times that didn't even seem afraid of our presence. It cost more than other courses in the area but worth it. Had a nice lunch there after our round. Called the day before for a tee time and had no problem and also found a 15% off coupon at the front desk of our campground. Beware that if playing in the morning you might run into some serious fog due to being in a valley surrounded by mountains. We teed of at 9:15 am and had a terrible time seeing the second and third holes. The fog was blinding, by the 4th hole it was sunny and crystal clear out.

A very nice course that will challenge the best golfer

We always play this course when we visit Bar Harbor because it has very forgiving fairways and yest provides a challenge with small greens. The par threes are fun, especially on the front nine. It is pricey for Maine, but very reasonable if you a play Sugarloaf or Belgrade Lakes. There are some unique holes, like the par three #9 that will leave you wondering how you got a double on your score card if you use the wrong club. The first par 5 is a great hole and you should par it easily if you bother to drive up the hill before taking the second shot...other than these two tips you are on your own just like president Taft.

Hard for high handicappers ...

Nice old course ... makes you wonder how golf was in past years versus today's technology.
Well maintained ... greens and fairways. Tee boxes uneven.
Besides brooks, hidden greens, you have 'humps' in fairways and before greens (in place of bunkers). Bunkers are gravel not soft sand.
Greens very very fast ... Sloped back to front ... If above pin & you just 'touch' w/putter, your ball can roll 5,10ft or off the green ... you're warned.
Saw some ladies but mostly men. Gotta hit the ball up in the air ... Elevated green, high rough.
Overpriced ... say by $25 pp. Hard for high handicaps ... your score will be 20-30 strokes over norm.
Lovely walk/cart beneath the Arcadia Mtns .... Play but don't count .....

Fast greens and classic layout that fits the eye

A wonderful test of golf near bar harbor. Greens are VERY fast and generally with a lot of break. If you are above the hole you will end up sliding by the hole 4-5 feet if you are not careful. A hidden gem

The pictures on the website do not do this course justice, as the pictures depict an ordinary course, which this is not. Seemingly short (6100 + from back tees), most holes play much longer. The greens can be treacherous and small, with severely tilting slopes (usually left to right). Don't be above the pin, ever. In particular, the 17th is the "Taft hole," with a 27 being recorded. After 3-putting, with my first putt going off the green, I can understand why. The club also rents some good clubs, and it's worth paying extra for the upgraded Titleist AP1 set.
